When you’re glued to FOX this weekend for the Champions League final and you notice no Americans on either squad, appreciate this:
Q: Who was the first (and only) American on a winning Champions League team?
A: Escondido, CA native Jovan Kirovski (not pictured) was with German club Brossuia Dortmund when they won the Champions League in 1997. Kirovski didn’t play in the Final, but did play and score in the tournament. Clint Dempsey is the only American to start in a European final, but it was the second tier 2010 Europa League (equivalent to the NIT in NCAA BB).
Kirovski left San Pasqual High School and spent 2 years playing with Manchester United’s youth academy before moving to Germany. The 34-year old is currently with the LA Galaxy in the MLS.
Catch Inter Milan vs. Bayern Munich in the final in Madrid on FOX at 11:30am PST.
