Friday Links – Smoke’s ’09, Padres Speak With Crisp’s Agent, Mruczkowski Filling In Nicely, Oceanside Plays For State Championship

Smoke009A Look Back At Tony Stewart’s First Year As A Driver/Owner - Stewart’s first win in the No. 14 Chevrolet came in the All-Star race, when he celebrated in Victory Lane with a number of employees from the former Haas/CNC Racing operation who had never previously been able to experience such a party. “To see those guys get their first win and be part of it with them was what I was really looking for,” Stewart said. “That means more than a million dollars does to me. It’s like I told [team co-owner] Gene Haas [after the All-Star win] at Charlotte: ‘There’s only one first and it doesn’t matter how many races you win, there’s only one first time that you go to Victory Lane with a new organization.’ This was our first one with a point win,” Stewart said after the race. “So this is the only first that we’re going to have in this situation. The rest of them are just going to be a number and stats down the road. So it is special.”- NASCAR.com

CrispyPadres Consider Adding Coco Crisp – Has free-agent outfielder Coco Crisp landed squarely on the Padres’ offseason radar? Steve Comte, the agent for Crisp, said on Thursday that both sides have had discussions about the 30-year-old switch-hitter, who would fit the Padres’ most pressing need of the offseason, a right-handed-hitting center fielder. He had surgery on his right labrum in June and his left labrum in July but is expected to be ready for Spring Training.

MoochMruczkowski Not Playing Like A Backup – Mruczkowski has flourished in a role he wasn’t happy about taking. He balked at the idea of moving from guard to center this offseason, a move made to provide depth at a position lacking it. Mruczkowski wanted to compete for a starting gig at right guard, a post vacated when Mike Goff left via free agency. Then the team drafted guard Louis Vasquez in the third round, followed by the move to center that ensured Mruczkowski would remain a backup. “It sucked when they brought Louis in, because it put me on the backburner for the starting spot at right guard,” Mruczkowski said. “It was tough to move to center and go back to being a role player. – NCTimes.com

OsideOceanside Football Team Plays For State Championship – The Oceanside High football team will face San Jose Bellarmine Prep tonight at 8 p.m. in the CIF Division I state championship game at the Home Depot Center in Carson. Oceanside’s tough defense will be matched up against San Jose’s power offense, a double wing, with two tight ends and two wings, standing heel-to-heel outside the tight ends. The fullback is an arm’s length behind the quarterback. All the linemen stand toe-to-toe. There are no splits, no gaps and no receivers. “It’s the ultimate power offense,” Oceanside coach John Carroll said. “It’s misdirection with double teams, kick-out blocks, three or four lead blockers with the quarterback in front. Every play is like trying to break the wedge on a kickoff return. It makes it very tough for the defense to get leverage. It’s an equalizer offense.” – NCTIMES.com

Harmony-GroveTeen Driver In Fatal Crash Denies Manslaughter Charges – A 17-year-old Escondido boy accused of driving drunk and killing his 18-year-old passenger in a Harmony Grove crash last week has a history of substance abuse and recent trouble with the law, a San Diego juvenile court judge said Thursday. The teen driver on Thursday denied charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated for the death of Jeffrey David Hodson, an Escondido resident who turned 18 days before his death. The charges could bring a sentence of up to 10 years in custody, Deputy District Attorney Giacomo Bucci said. – NCTIMES.com
